Cremation

Cremation is a high temperature combustion process, usually using natural gas as a fuel. It takes about 3 hours and only one casket is cremated at a time. The ashes are transferred to a small plastic container and may then be placed into a more attractive urn. A selection of urns is available.

You may wish to scatter or inter the ashes:

  • at sea – from the shore or from a boat

  • at the cemetery – scattered in a rose garden or native bush or interred in ground plots or niche walls – plaques or headstones may be used

  • in a family grave

  • at your own or the deceased’s home

  • another place of significance to you

In some cases permission may need to be sought and charges paid.

A number of approved crematoria are available in the Wellington region:

  • Karori Crematorium – Wellington City Council

  • Harbour City Funeral Home – privately operated

  • Whenua Tapu Crematorium – Porirua City Council

Scattering Ashes

There are things that we don't want to happen but have to accept, things that we don't want to know but have to learn, and people we can't live without but have  to let go.
